Every year a few 3D concert movies are released in theaters that are mainly targeting the teeny-bopper crowd. These movies have featured such stars as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and most recently One Direction. If you are a parent and had to attend one of these movies with your kids, you probably wanted to claw your eyes out and rip off your ears. Finally, there is a concert movie that is aimed more at adults, but your kids should really see it too. "Metallica Through the Never".

Most of these other concert films are documentaries. They mix concert footage along with a behind the scenes look at the subject's lives on the road or the story on how they came to be. "Metallica Through the Never" does not bother with such a wimpy style. What director Nimród Antal came up with is to mix in an actual story with the live concert footage that plays throughout the movie. This is an important element too, considering those other movies can go through large gaps without showing any concert footage.

In "Metallica Through the Never" a young roadie named Trip (Dane DeHaan) is given an assignment to find a broken down truck that has something the band needs. Trip gets more than he bargains for as he encounters a world that is surreal to say the least. The best way to describe this land Trip must travel through is that if Metallica were God, this might have been the world that was created. In order for Trip to survive the night and complete his task, he will have to get past The Rider.

The concert footage really rocks! While many concert stages are placed at one end of an arena, Metallica sets up their stage right in the middle so they are completely surrounded by the audience. The stage they play on is one big video monitor that shows images which syncs up well with whatever the band is playing. Forget those other concerts of the singers doing coordinated dancing while they may or may not be lip syncing. Metallica puts on one amazing stage show that includes tombstones rising, like the ones from their "Master of Puppets" album cover. A huge statue is erected during the show and stuntmen are also utilized.

Currently "Metallica Through the Never" is playing exclusively on IMAX 3D screens and it is worth every penny to see it in that format! How good is the 3D? At times you may think someone is standing in front of you are waving their hands in front of your face, then you realize that was someone on the movie screen and not in the movie theater with you. Seeing it on an IMAX screen almost feels like you are attending the concert in person. Plus, the scenes with Trip are done quite well and plays even better in IMAX 3D. The movie just opened two days ago on September 27, but opens in theaters everywhere on October 4.

"Metallica Through the Never" is rated R due to some violent images and language, but parents who had to endure these other concert movies with their teenaged children should really consider taking them to see this movie. First, let them see what a real concert looks like. Second, they should get a good dose of rock and roll and Metallica is just the band to deliver that to them. Even if you are not familiar with the band, but you like a good rock concert, this movie delivers on all levels.
